meeting point : S.Zaccaria ( Pietà) boat line n 2
last of the tour h 1
from S.Zaccaria, we have to get boat line n 2 and get off at the boat stop:San Giorgio Maggiore (so named to distinguish it from San Giorgio in Alga) has a very intense story: it was once called the "island of the cypresses" to the abundant presence of these trees. Moreover, housed vineyards, orchards, a mill, a salt and a small church built towards the 790.
Then, thanks to Giovanni Morosini, it was settled by the Benedictine monks and become, over the years, one of the most important sites of the order in Italy.
Numerous pictures to take with us to return home: the church built by Palladio, with inside some oils on canvas by Tintoretto, the Dormitory or longsleeve - the oldest part of the monastery - the charming cloister of laurels and cypresses' one, the Refectory - or Palladian Aula - and the more recent Green Theatre, built inside the park thanks to the Fondazione Cini.
Is absolutely obligatory to climb up the tower, for the height, the second Venetian bell after the San Marco one, to give us an other celestial visions of the city: from here we can see the Giudecca, San Marco, the Lido island and all the mirror of the lagoon.
For those with a sensitive soul, the emotion is so intense to desire the eternity of the moment ...
Before leaving this little paradise, we suggest to rest in the only restaurant of the island, to eat some typical Venetian cuisine and drinking a glass of wine; from here you will enjoy the most beautiful scenery of the world which has only one name: VENICE!
